Monks march to Gangtok with Karmapa demand - Sikkim Express
GANGTOK, February 15: “The Indian government is our mother. We have been regularly pleading with our mother. If the Indian government cannot fulfill our demand, it should tell us where to go with our demand and we will go there,”said Sangha MLA Sonam Lama on Wednesday.
The Sangha MLA was speaking to the monks before they took off in a foot march from Rangpo to Gangtok on Tuesday morning.
The rally is being held by monks under the banner of‘The Denjong Lhadey’with their pending demand that their religious guru 17th Gyalwang Karmapa is allowed to visit and bless Sikkim by the Union government. The Monks are halting at Sangkhola tonight and reach Gangtok tomorrow evening.
Lama said the foot march was organized as the Union government and Sikkim government did not take any initiative on the Karmapa demand even after the relay hunger strike of more than 200 days by the monks at Gangtok. We want to bring our demand to the attention of the Centre through this rally, he said.
The Sangha MLA urged the Sikkim government to place the demand of the monk community before the Centre for serious consideration.
